Travel - Beginning the course

EAS X429 will begin formally in Rapid City, South Dakota on Tuesday, June 19.

The first session of the course will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Ramada- 1902 N. Lacrosse St., Rapid City, SD. You have the following options to get to Rapid City:

  • make your own arrangements to Rapid City
  • ride with the Indiana University caravan from Bloomington, Indiana

Details for each option

Rapid City, South Dakota
  • You should arrive in Rapid City on Tuesday, June 19 no later than 5:30 p.m.
  • You should plan to be at the Ramada - 1902 N. Lacrosse St. by 5:30 p.m.
  • You are responsible for your own transportation from the airport/bus terminal to the motel.
  • The Ramada provides free transportation from the airport to the hotel via the Airport Express Shuttle.
  • There is no parking available in Rapid City for personal vehicles; leaving a car in Rapid City while you are participating in the course is not an option.
  • The transportation fee remains the same whether you join the group in Rapid City or in Bloomington.
  • Do not attempt to check in the motel if you arrive prior to the caravan. Wait in the lobby, as you must be checked in and assigned to a room by an Indiana University representative.
Bloomington, Indiana
  • You should arrive in Bloomington on Sunday, June 17 no later than 5:00 p.m.
  • Check-in is between 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Sunday in the lobby of the Geology Building, 1001 E. 10th St.
  • There will be a short mandatory organizational meeting at 6:00 p.m. for students traveling with the caravan to Rapid City.
  • If you need a dorm room Sunday night before the caravan departs for Rapid City, please indicate that on your travel form, so a room can be reserved for you. All rooms must be reserved in advance and the fee for a roomwill be $50.40, which will be added to your Bursar account.
  • The caravan will leave the parking lot of the Geology building promptly at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, June 18. Breakfast will be served in the lobby of the Geology building beginning at 6:00 a.m.
If you are flying to Bloomington

Fly into Indianapolis on a flight arriving no later than 1:30 p.m. in order to make the 2:40 p.m. shuttle. For earlier shuttle departure times, check the schedule on their website, http://goexpresstravel.com/airport_shuttle_schedule.

Take the Bloomington Shuttle from the airport to the Indiana Memorial Union. A van from Geology will be there to pick you up and drive you to the Geology building.

Make reservations in advance at www.bloomingtonshuttle.com. You will only need a one way reservation since the return caravan will drop students off at the airport before returning to Bloomington. Your cost is $18 for a one way trip if you make your reservation online and $20 if you purchase your ticket at the airport kiosk.

If you are driving to Bloomington

Purchase a parking permit to leave your vehicle on the Indiana University campus while you are in Montana. The cost is $48.00 and will be added to your Bursar account.

Make certain that your car license plates do not expire during the 6 week period the vehicle will be in Bloomington or risk being issued a ticket.

Travel - upon completion of the course

The caravan will leave the Field Station on Tuesday, July 31st.

You have the following options:

  • Depart via airplane or bus from Bozeman, Montana or Rapid City, South Dakota on July 31.
  • Depart via airplane from Indianapolis on August 2.
  • Depart from Bloomington via your own transportation on August 2.

Details for each option

Bozeman, Montana or Rapid City, South Dakota

Bozeman, Montana or Rapid City, South Dakota (Do not make reservations out of Butte as we are unable to providetransportation there). There is no additional charge for transportation to Bozeman or Rapid City.

  • Transportation will be provided on Tuesday, July 31 for those planning to depart by airplane or bus from Bozeman or Rapid City.
  • Reservations out of Bozeman should be made for flights leaving after 11:00 a.m. on July 31.
  • Reservations out of Rapid City should be made for flights leaving after 9:30 p.m. on July 31 or the morning of August 1. The caravan will arrive in Rapid City sometime in the evening on August 1. Students traveling out of Rapid City will be dropped off at the Rushmore Mall. You are responsible for getting yourself to the airport and/or making arrangements to spend the night in Rapid City.
Depart from Indianapolis and depart from Bloomington
  • This trip is not an official part of the course, but is provided as a convenience for those who wish to take advantage of University transportation. There will be an additional charge of $50, which covers the cost of motels, for students returning to Indianapolis or Bloomington with the caravan. The first night will be spent in Kadoka, South Dakota and the second night in Coralville, Iowa.
  • You must indicate on your travel form that you will be returning to Bloomington with the caravan.
  • The $50 motel charge will be added to your Bursar account.
  • The caravan should arrive at the Indianapolis airport around 5:00 p.m. Reservations should be made for flights leaving after 7:00 p.m. on August 2.
  • The caravan will arrive in Bloomington late afternoon (approximately 6:00 p.m.) on Thursday, August 2.
