Structural Analysis (EAS G700) is designed to provide an intense 12-day field-based program taught at the Indiana University Geological Field Station. The seminar will focus on the creation of a 3D model that can be studied and restored using state of the art software packages. The seminar will start with fieldwork on a well-exposed fold, locally referred to as the J-Fold, which is associated with the Sappington Thrust Fault.
G700 course dates: August 3-14, 2019
Fieldwork will include stratigraphic work, field mapping, and the collection of data to construct a series of dip cross sections. Teams will be assigned to complete a suite of dip cross sections that will permit the creation of a 3D model. The cross sections will be worked to provide first order balancing with eventual near-final balancing taking place as the teams work together to assure 3D consistency. Field checking will be done continuously to resolve any questions or disputes. The latter portion of the course will involve the creation of a 3D model.
Note that this course is physically demanding. You should be in good health and capable of strenuous hiking on rugged terrain while carrying a daypack and field gear.
